Regatta Reports

Report by Martin (Regatta & Camp Leader)

Hawke Sea Scout Troop recently attended the annual Northland Regatta, held at Kai Iwi Lakes. Our party consisted of 17 Youth and seven adults/leaders. A great weekend was had by all, assisted by glorious weather.
Saturday was generally overcast in the morning, with glimpses of sun, clearing in the mid afternoon, which kept burn time exposure low. The Programme consisted of sailing of both Cutter and Sunburst classes, in conjunction with canoe racing. Wind built steadily during the day, from mainly the Nor/west, 8-10 knots. Wild wind shifts were experienced, and as always at Kai Iwi, these wind shifts made for challenging sailing, requiring evan more concentration on the elements than is normal. Conditions during a typical race varied from a stiff 15 knot gust to dead calm, repeating more than once...
Our Scouts were pretty much all day on the water, with the Juniors competing in both Junior and Intermediate sailing races, and the Intermediates participating in both the Intermediate and Senior Sailing, and placing First in the latter. Sunday saw competition in both Rowing and Ironman events.
The Regatta conclusion was as folllows.
Hawke Sea Scouts- SECOND OVERALL, winning the following events:- Int. Rowing, Agg Cutter Agg. Canoe, Snr Cutter, Snr Canoe, Int Canoe, Int Ironman & Open Ironman. Second placings for Hawke were:- Regatta Aggregate, Ironman Agg. Jnr Cutter, Snr Ironman, Snr Sunburst, Snr Rowing, Open Canoe & Int. Cutter.Third Placings. Open Sunburst.
WELL DONE SCOUTS & VENTURERS. IT IS ALMOST 40YEARS SINCE HAWKE HAS PLACED SO WELL AT THE NORTHLAND REGATTA. FANTASTIC RESULT. BRILLIANT.
The weekend was incident free from an injury or incident perspective. We all enjoyed the event and each other's company. Behaviour and manners were exceptional. All undertook tasks allocated to them. A splendid example of Scouting as it is designed to be. Thanks to all who transported Scouts, collated victuals, rigged and maintained boats, and thanks to the Scouts and Venturers who participated so whole heartedly, in such excellent spirit.
